Dark clouds looming overhead threatened the IJGA’s regional event at Marengo Ridge GC in Marengo, Ill. on Wednesday, but the rains never came. The fog did, however, making the day a little more challenging for the field. The course, featuring plenty of water and numerous doglegs, forced competitors to get creative.
But Joseph Carlson (Inverness, IL) didn’t seem too intimidated by the course, as he posted the low score for the day, a one-under-par round of 71. Carlson’s impressive round consisted of two back-to-back birdies on holes 8 and 9 on the front and 13 and 14 on the backside.
Carlson’s 71 earned him a first place finish in the Junior Boys division. Ryan Smith (Elgin, IL) took second in the division, carding a 79, while Michael Holevas (Elgin, IL) finished a shot back from Smith in third place.
There was some competition at the top of the leaderboard in the Senior Boys division. Kennan Murphy (Crystal Lake, IL) and Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, IL) tied for first place with a pair of 74s, while Max Tucker (Marengo, IL) and Lucas Crowley (Dunlap, IL) tied for third with a pair of 80s. Murphy won the playoff to claim first place honors while Tucker won his scorecard playoff to take home third place.
On the girls’ side, there was only a stroke difference between the Ellett sisters in the Junior Girls division. Connie Ellett (Hampshire, IL) carded an 82, taking first place, while her sister, Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, IL) fired an 83 for second place. Rounding out the top three was Cynthia Bounleutay (Rockford, IL) with an 86.
Lauren Lenkowski (Batavia, IL) was the lone competitor in the Senior Girls division. Lenkowski’s 88 earned her a first place finish in the flight.
