The IJGA was up in Waukegan, Ill. on Friday for the sixth Regional event of the season at Bonnie Brook GC. It was a hot and muggy day with strong winds and wet conditions, as the course was still drying out from the area’s torrential rains on Thursday. But none of that seemed to affect the excellent efforts of the junior golfers. Marina Karamanis (Barrington, IL), hot off of her win at the season’s first Regional event at Cary CC, carded the low round of the day with a four-over-par 76. Karamanis finished with style, birdying the eighteenth hole. Brittany Rendell (Winnetka, IL) finished just three shots back of Karamanis, placing second in the Senior Girls division. Katherine Kuhn rounded out the top three finishers in the division with an 88. The competition was fierce among the Senior Boys division, as there was a three-way tie for first place. Josk Ok(Libertyville, IL), Bret Carroll (Northbrook, IL) and William Stone (Libertyville, IL) all carded 77s to force an on-course playoff for first place. Ok won the playoff, grabbing first place honors and 90 POY points. Competition was also tight atop the Junior Boys leaderboard, with only two strokes separating first and third place. Ryan Colbourn (Lincolnshire, IL) carded a 78 for first place, while Jordan Stein was a mere stroke behind with 79, taking second place. Alex Pabich (Kildeer, IL) finished in third with an 80. Abbie Horan (Antioch, IL), who was the champion at the Medinah Country Shrine Junior Invitational, grabbed first place honors in the Junior Girls division with an 82. Katy O’Malley (Wilmette, IL) was three strokes back of Horan with an 85, earning her second place, while Kristin Wright (Winnetka, IL) finished third. The Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing playing opportunities for its members, conducting educational clinics and events while acting as a junior golf informational clearinghouse. One of the largest and most comprehensive junior associations in the United States, the IJGA has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 7-18) of approximately 2200.
The Association is served and governed by a Governing Board of Directors comprised of 15 volunteers including four (4) representatives of both the Illinois Section of the PGA (IPGA) and the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA). Additional Board members are selected based on their commitment to junior golf and include parents, representatives from the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), the Illinois Coaches Association (ICA), college golf coaches and community leaders. | |
