The winds picked up and the temperatures dropped once again as players finished the second round of the 2008 Medinah Shriner’s Junior Invitational on course #2 at Medinah Country Club.
The second 18 holes started at 1:30pm for both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. Things heated up with some exceptionally impressive rounds. Erik Peterson (Palatine, IL) took honors for the low round of the day with a 3-under-par 69.
“I started making some putts during this round and it made all the difference,” Peterson said. “My putt on the last hole was clutch. I had about 10 feet left to save par and I knew it was to stay under 70.”
However, it was not enough to stop this year's 2008 Medinah Shriner’s Junior Invitational Boys Champion, Jonathan Hauter. His 4-over-par 76 brought his two round total to a victorious result of 148.
But it wasn’t that easy. Dan Alsup (Rolling Meadows, IL) carded two consistent rounds of 74 to force a play-off with hauter, the first round leader. After one hole, Hauter claimed the championship trophy.
“I actually struck the ball better this round, but a penalty on the last hole put me into the playoff,” Hauter said.
There was another playoff for third as Brad Klune (Itasca, IL) and Matt Hageman (Dixon, IL) tied with 149s. But after one hole, Hageman came out on top.
Abbie Horan (Antioch, IL) made a comeback during the second round to capture the title for the Girls’ 14-18 division. Horan shot 78 on course #2 after shooting 82 during the first round to squeeze by first round leader Ember Schuldt by one stroke.
“I started the second round with a back-to-back eagle and birdie and that really set the pace for the round,” Horan said. “From there I just pared-out. I’m just glad I brought extra layers for the cold weather towards the end.”
But the real winners of the day were the Medinah Shriners and the hospitals they support. The IJGA made a donation of $11,500 to the charity, far-surpassing previous years' donations.
The Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing playing opportunities for its members, conducting educational clinics and events while acting as a junior golf informational clearinghouse. One of the largest and most comprehensive junior associations in the United States, the IJGA has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 7-18) of approximately 2200.
The Association is served and governed by a Governing Board of Directors comprised of 15 volunteers including four (4) representatives of both the Illinois Section of the PGA (IPGA) and the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA). Additional Board members are selected based on their commitment to junior golf and include parents, representatives from the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), the Illinois Coaches Association (ICA), college golf coaches and community leaders.
