The IJGA YDP Jean Barney Parent Junior Series

Jean and her husband John Barney were involved with the IJGA from its early beginnings and eventually took over all operations of the association in 1986.  Jean and John Barney were inducted into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame in 1997 in honor of their contributions and dedication to junior golf. 

“Jean Barney’s work, on behalf of junior golfers across the state of Illinois, has been invaluable.  Her dedication and commitment to the IJGA laid the groundwork for what is now the second largest junior association in the USA,” said executive director, Dan McGuire.

Scott Persin, IJGA’s previous Tournament Director, fondly recalls Jean’s presence at IJGA events during his days as an IJGA Playing Member.  “Mrs. Barney always brought a special sense of belonging to every IJGA event.  Her warm smile and personality always made the players feel as if they were part of a large family, not just an organization.”

On May 8, 2002, Jean Barney passed away.  However, her memory still lives on in the hearts of those who knew of her and of her love for junior golf.  It is with great pride that we recognize Jean’s contributions to the Illinois Junior Golf Association by renaming the YDP Parent/Junior Events in her honor.
