Dark clouds loomed over Poplar Creek Country Club on Thursday, threatening to wash out the first Youth Development Program event of the season. But the rain couldn’t keep these kids off of the course.

These junior golfers proved that age is just a number, as there was some excellent play throughout the day. In the Boys 12-13 division, there were five scores in the 70s. Doug Ghim (Arlington Heights, IL) carded the low score for the day, firing a four-over-par round of 74. Ghim’s exceptional round included three birdies.

Raymond Knoll (Naperville, IL) came in second with another impressive score of 76. Andrew Barrett (Lake Forest, IL) rounded out the top three finishers with a seven-over-par 77.

Stephanie Miller (Wauconda, IL) was low for the Girls 12-13 (18 holes) division. Miller carded an 83 for the day, which included a birdie on the sixth hole. Ariana Furrie (St. Charles, IL) placed second with an 86 while Renee Solberg claimed third with an 88.

Carrie Trapani (Deerfield, IL) and Ayanna Warner (Chicago, IL) were the only two girls to compete in the Girls 12-13 (9 holes) division, placing first and second, respectively.

The Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing playing opportunities for its members, conducting educational clinics and events while acting as a junior golf informational clearinghouse. One of the largest and most comprehensive junior associations in the United States, the IJGA has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 7-18) of approximately 2200.

The Association is served and governed by a Governing Board of Directors comprised of 15 volunteers including four (4) representatives of both the Illinois Section of the PGA (IPGA) and the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA). Additional Board members are selected based on their commitment to junior golf and include parents, representatives from the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), the Illinois Coaches Association (ICA), college golf coaches and community leaders.
