EVENT FORMAT

John Barney Junior Elite Events

The John Barney Junior Elite Events are named after John Barney, who along with his wife Jean Barney, helped found the IJGA. John and Jean served the IJGA for 23 years and were largely responsible for taking it from a fledgling organization to one of the most respected junior golf associations in the country. John served as IJGA President and became the first IJGA Executive Director in 1991. The impact of John and Jean Barney on the IJGA will be felt for years to come. John Barney passed away in 2017 and the John Barney Memorial Fund was created to support the John Barney Junior Elite Events, as he was especially fond of the younger IJGA members.

These events occur throughout the summer and fall and are two (2) day, 36-hole events.

These events are designed for the elite 10-15 year olds that are looking to keep their competitive tournament play going in 36-hole events throughout the season. Each of these SUMMER events will carry player of the year points and will count towards the YDP Player of the Year Championships. Spectators will be allowed on the course for these events but must follow our spectator guidelines at all times.

The pairings order will be as follows...
Boys 12-15, Girls 12-15, Boys 10-11, Girls 10-11

Exact yardages will vary based on each golf course. The IJGA staff will set the individual IJGA tees each morning based on conditions and course setup. Listed below is the general range of yardage that we use for each division, but please visit the Contests section of this information page to find more specific yardages that the IJGA staff will base the yardages off each morning.

NOTE: The IJGA does not always use one set of course tees to play from for around, and will many times use the fairway to place tees, particularly for the younger divisions.

Boys 12-15 – 5,800-6,200 yards

Junior Golf Scoreboard
  • Any division in which 5 or more competitors complete at least a 36 hole event are JGS ranked.

Results will not be submitted for the Girls 10-11 Division.
Global Junior Golf Rankings
  • This event is ranked under the Global Junior Golf Rankings system. Assuming a minimum of 18 holes are completed by at least 5 players from the same yardage
Beginning April 3, 2017:

1) All official scores for players who fail to finish an event will be included in their competitive record for their ranking calculation.
2) Those rounds will be treated as any other round.

- Players competing in events scheduled for 36 holes or more, if the event is weather shortened, will have all completed rounds entered in their record to be used in their ranking unless not part of their best 75%.
- Players who miss an 18 hole cut, will have that score entered in their record and used in their ranking unless not part of their best 75%
Players who fail to complete an event (WD, NC, NS, DQ) will have all completed rounds entered in their record to be used in their ranking, unless not part of their best 75%, or they are reported as a "Justified Withdrawal" - JWD.
- If a qualified event has a less than 18 hole round as part of the competition (e.g - second round suspended after 9 holes) that score will be recorded for each player for the purposes of determining the "finish" but will not be used in a player's differential calculation.

The following is an explanation of what is sent to the Junior Golf Scoreboard:

DNS- No show before competition began. This is NOT reported to JGS.

DQ- Disqualification as a result of a USGA Rules infraction. This IS reported to JGS along with any official scores (if 1 or more rounds have been completed).

WD- Withdrawal from a competition. This IS reported to JGS along with any official scores (if 1 or more rounds have been completed).

NS- No show after competition began. This IS reported to JGS along with any official scores (if 1 or more rounds have been completed).

NC- No card after having begun a competition-- a deliberate decision not to sign or turn in a card or player walks off the course. This IS reported to JGS along with any official scores (if 1 or more rounds have been completed).
Summer Junior Elite Events allow registered spectators access to the course. All spectators must sign in with IJGA staff and receive and wear an approved spectator wristband prior to accessing the golf course.

Please note that if any of the following guidelines are perceived as broken by a IJGA official, the player may be subject to penalty. Please remember that spectating is a PRIVILEGE not a RIGHT.

Advice under Rule 10.2a is any verbal comment or action (such as showing what club was just used to make a stroke) that is intended to influence you or another player in choosing a club, making a stroke, or deciding how to play during a hole or round. But advice does not include public information, such as the location of things on the course, the distance from one point to another, or the Rules. Players are responsible for the actions of their relatives and spectators in regards to this rule.

In addition to the USGA definition of Advice, for which a player may be penalized, the IJGA has a set of activities that spectators may not participate in. Breach of the following by a spectator may result in the spectator being immediately removed from an IJGA event, and prohibited from spectating in the future:

IJGA SPECTATORS MAY NOT:
Give/Offer advice of any kind during round
Make rulings; Please alert IJGA Staff instead
Stand on tee box behind players while they are teeing off
Call penalties’ on players
Violate host golf course policies/rules
Walk in fairways, greens and tees
Use profane/abusive language toward players or staff

Keeping the above statement in mind, keep your conversation with the player to words of encouragement as long as advice is not given. Be supportive of all players in the group/event.

NOTE: The IJGA does not allow spectator carts except if the spectator has a handicap placard or doctor's note. Spectators must present their placard/note to the Tournament Director prior to getting a golf cart. Spectators will not receive a cart unless they have this official placard/note.

For more information, the full IJGA spectator policy can be found at the following web address, https://www.ijga.org/policies/#spectator.
